Course Description

Teeth, Muscle, TMJ, Airway and Systemic FactoringIn the core curriculum, a systematic process for conducting a comprehensive examination, taking diagnostic records and developing a treatment plan was introduced. This process works for the majority of patients which have healthy TMJs. As we continue the pathway to complete dentistry we will encounter patients who present with odotogenic problems as well as masticatory muscle, TMJ, airway issues and orofacial pain. How do we proceed with these more complex patients and still follow our Examination and Treatment Planning protocols? What do we do if these patients also have restorative and esthetic needs? This course adds to the concepts you already know from the core curriculum presenting additional layers to identify, diagnose and treat the more advanced patients. Imaging, CBCT, T-Scan, airway screening and TMJ surgery will be discussed. Phase I reversible therapy will focus on splint therapy selected based on the suspected TMJ diagnosis. Phase II therapy will focus on the definitive treatment steps required to establish a lasting and comfortable occlusion. Students will be given the necessary information and records to work through several cases. Insight for developing your orofacial pain interdisciplinary team will be presented.
