A Complete Curriculum:

The Dawson Academy

The Dawson Academy is a postgraduate educational and clinical research facility, dedicated to the advancement of dentistry. All of our instructors are practicing dental professionals who have implemented the Dawson teachings into their own practices and bring that real-world experience back to the classroom. The Dawson Academy’s Core Curriculum teaches the fundamental principles and clinical skills that make dentistry completely predictable.

Hands-On Courses

Our Hands-On classes at The Dawson Academy are limited in enrollment to afford participants the maximum opportunity to practice the skills in a hands-on format.

We utilise state of the art learning techniques to ensure that students go beyond just understanding principles to actually being able to implement the concepts and skills in their practices.

Lectures

The curriculum at The Dawson Academy has been developed as a complete plan for general dentists, specialists and dental practice team members striving to develop a highly effective practice. The courses have been designed to clarify the concepts and provide hands-on-training in the skills that are needed to practice master quality, complete dentistry.

Success in today’s fee-for-service environment requires competencies in a triad of skills: diagnostic, clinical and organisational. The classes at The Dawson Academy have been built around the need to develop these competencies and are structured to meet needs in all three areas.

Core Curriculum: Lecture and Hands-On Series

Comprehensive Examination & Records

This course is your gateway to a proven path of clinical and professional excellence. As the foundational course in the “Concept of Complete DentistryTM Series”, you will learn the timeless message that good dentistry, aesthetic dentistry, complete dentistry must begin with a thorough understanding of occlusion and the functions of the masticatory system. A complete treatment plan is devised after making a thorough diagnosis which is based upon comprehensive records. You will learn how to take excellent clinical photographs, facebow record, the easiest, simplest and most predictable way to take a Centric Relation bite record and a comprehensive examination process including muscle examination and TMJ analysis. We will discuss which patients are straightforward to treat and which require occlusal therapy before definitive treatment is performed.

Treatment Planning Functional Esthetic Excellence

This course provides the participant with a programmed approach to diagnosis and treatment planning. Utilising the standardised records taught in Comprehensive Records and Examination, each dentist will learn how to visualise optimum dentistry from an aesthetic, functional, biological and structural perspective. Special emphasis will be placed on the four options of treatment (reshaping, repositioning, restoring and surgical correction), so that the correct option(s) are chosen for each patient. Additionally, each student will learn how to segment large treatment plans, so that patients with financial issues can receive optimum care over time. The focus of the programme is to integrate a comprehensive treatment planning process into their practice. Suggestions will also be made on creating time and a place for optimum treatment planning. Finally, a consultation process will be discussed in detail, ensuring each participant will enjoy a healthy case acceptance rate.

Additionally, the attending dentists will learn which material should be considered for each individual patient circumstance. Each participant will learn to utilise digital photographs in conjunction with the mounted diagnostic models to visualise the necessary functional and aesthetic changes, and create a diagnostic wax-up. They will learn how to create preparation reduction guides, and provisional matrixes to guide them through the preparation appointment. Occlusal Splint Therapy Hands-On Course

Occlusal splint therapy is one of the most commonly utilised treatment modalities for temporomandibular disorders, yet is often given only minimal consideration in continuing education. Properly designed and carried out, an occlusal orthosis is one of the most important and predictably effective tools available for the management of masticatory muscle and temporomandibular joint pathologic conditions, as well as in cases of nocturnal bruxism, and before, during and following treatment in association with certain restorative cases today. Because a number of philosophies regarding goals, indications and design exist, occlusal splint therapy is often misunderstood and therefore inadequately used.
